Carnival in Munich 2025: City events and street carnival canceled

One day after canceling the carnival parade of the Damische Ritter, the state capital has also canceled Carnival Thursday (February 27) and the Market Women's Dance (March 4) at Viktualienmarkt. The street carnival “München narrisch” (March 2 to 4) in the pedestrian zone of the old town will also not take place this year. This is due to the attack in Munich on February 13, which claimed two lives.

After the attack in Munich: City cancels carnival events

The Department for Municipal Affairs and the Munich Markets as the organizer have decided not to hold the municipal carnival events on Thursday, February 27 (Dance of the Market Women) and on Shrove Tuesday, March 4 (Nonsensical Thursday) at the Viktualienmarkt in light of the attack on the Ver.di demonstration on February 13.

Carnival cancellation: Statement from the state capital

“In light of the attack and in particular the violent death of our colleague from the city administration and her young daughter, it seems inconceivable to us as a city family to celebrate carnival at the Viktualienmarkt without a care in the world. As a city family, we cannot simply pull the lever again in the face of our many colleagues who were physically and mentally affected by the attack. As a city family, we are deeply affected, saddened and stunned by the immeasurable suffering that has befallen our hometown.

That is why we ask everyone who has been working towards the two events for weeks and months to understand that both municipal carnival events at the Viktualienmarkt are hereby canceled.

As a city family, we have not taken this decision lightly - just as the Damische Ritter did when they canceled yesterday's big carnival parade. But we believe it is necessary in these difficult times.

The time will come when we can celebrate peacefully and happily together again. We can't do that at the moment.”

München narrisch and carnival parade of the Damische Ritter also canceled

The street carnival “München narrisch”, which was to take place from March 2 to 4, 2025 in the pedestrian zone of the old town with two open-air stages, has also been cancelled.

“We are following the cancellation of the “Nonsensical Thursday” and the “Dance of the Market Women” by the Department for Municipal Affairs. München narrisch mourns together with the stallholders and thinks of the victims and the bereaved in these difficult hours”, München Narrisch e.V. announced.

On Monday, the “Damischen Ritter” already cancelled their planned carnival parade on Sunday, February 23, 2025, due to the attack in Munich. They issued a statement on Monday evening announcing the cancellation.
