Oktoberfest tradition of the Ochsenbraterei: oxen have been served here for over 140 years

In 1881, a whole ox was turned on the spit of a tent for the first time, marking the birth of the ox roast. The butcher Johann Rössler came up with the idea, and this unique selling point immediately secured him an audience at the Oktoberfest. The Spatenbrauerei then took over the tent in 1980 and it was completely rebuilt in 2017. Tradition is important to the Haberl family, who have been running the Ochsenbraterei for over 40 years. This is clearly visible in the white and blue sky of the tent and the hand-painted traditional costume figures. Over 100 oxen are eaten here every year. They come from the municipal Karlshof estate and are named on plaques in the tent.

Atmosphere in the Ochsenbraterei

Sebastian Lehner

The Ochsenbraterei is more of a “Munich tent”, if you like, where many municipal companies and clubs have their regulars' table. Of course, many fans of good food also come here, as roast ox is a culinary specialty at the Oktoberfest. The international party crowd is rarely to be found in the Ochsenbraterei, especially during the day it is very cozy here. This is ensured by Mathias Achatz's Oktoberfest band, which only plays folk music during the day. But let there be no misunderstanding: When the music changes from traditional to boisterous in the evening, the Ochsenbraterei also has a great atmosphere.
